Why are Facebook games so popular? I’ve started to play Restaurant City and Mafia Wars on Facebook when I was overseas, since I didn’t had my computer with me to play any other games. I gave up on Restaurant City after a few days, but I’m continuing to play Mafia Wars, and in some ways, I am addicted to Mafia Wars.

The simplicity of Facebook games, them being casual games, allow for students and working adults to mindlessly click on their little sanctuary and to grow them. Like traditional MMORPGs, these games are basically farming games. By farming, we mean clicking and clicking, doing repeated actions in the game, to level up and achieve certain items or game money. I’ve always wondered why farming in MMORPGs are so addictive even though it can be so tedious, and I even wrote a blog post on how MMORPGs is a reflection of life.

I guess in casual games, it doesn’t matter if you’re smart or stupid, pretty or ugly etc., so as long as you are willing to click in the game, a few times a day, you will be rewarded. That doesn’t always happen in life. It doesn’t mean if we work hard enough, we’ll all be millionaires someday.

The reason why I stopped playing Restaurant City was, it was simply too easy and too mindless. By clicking on your restaurant, making your workers work or rest, and earning money to renovate your restaurant, just doesn’t make sense to me. In the end, all you get is lots of money to renovate your restaurant. If you’re one that is easily contended, the most basic restaurant given to you will suffice. Boring. Next.

Mafia Wars, on the other hand, farming mafia jobs gives you money and skill points to build your mafia. The stronger your mafia, the more power you have to fight other players and “beat” them. I guess the addictive factor of Mafia Wars is that it appeals to our competitive nature. We want to be stronger and better than other players. We want to win. The only thing that is stopping you from becoming a multi-millionaire with the sickest mafia crew is the risk that your manager might catch you clicking away on Facebook during work hours!

It’s a dog eat dog world out there. Perhaps especially so in Singapore? One very important lesson I’ve learnt from working is either you command someone or someone command you, or, both ways.

And trust me, being at the end of the food chain is the worst feeling there is. Some people are born with bigger balls, more guts, so they can start their own business and earn big bucks, others have to be like robots – monotonously slaving their lives away for others, to earn money. I guess, for now, Priss without much working experience or insights into any particular field, I’m stuck being a robot!

But robots can be upgraded too! I’ve plans to further my studies so that I’m a Robot Plus. If you’re fated to be a robot all your lives, it’s better to be a Robot plus right? You get more respect, better pay, less shit from your superiors.

Oh well, if everything goes right, this time next year I should be mugging for my 4th year honors

Priss = Robot upgrading in process

Someone once told me, as long as you don’t feel reluctant to go to work every morning you wake up, it’s still ok.

Every morning, my legs are soft, my shoulders sloppy, the expression on my face, jaded.

Watch The Last Comic Standing season 5 & 6, made me think, it’s not true when people tell you that no one enjoys their job. Some people dare to pursue their dreams, and only a few succeeds. Sad, but true.

Perhaps attempting to search for the ideal job is not easy, takes a few trial & errors, many don’t even come close to finding the perfect job but they just swallow it anyway. Luckily for me, I still have time for trials and for errors, and maybe, I’ve erred on this first try.

What to do.

Shouldn’t it be obvious that people shouldn’t use blogs as private diaries? Once you post something in your blog, it’s for the world to see. If you really need to type your diaries instead of writing them the conventional way, then type your diaries into notepad text files and save it in your computer.

Lately, there have been quite a few scandals and criticisms on what is posted on people’s personal blogs. Yes, a blog is a medium whereby ‘commoners’ like me and you can act out our inner fantasies of being a journalist or even a tabloid magazine writer, or perhaps to an extend, an online biography of yourself But blogging about your family or your work or even friends is just plain insensitive and inconsiderate.

Read here and here for some news about this SIA stewardess blogging about her work, her passengers and her affair with a married pilot.

Why people shouldn’t blog about their work:

1. Blogging ANYTHING that casts your company in a bad light is disloyal and to a more serious extent, treacherous.

2. Blogging about your clients/customers is very unprofessional.

3. Blogging about your co-workers is worse than point 2, because you never know who’s reading your blog. Creating more backstabbing publicly would cause more unhappiness at work and possibly affect the morale of your colleagues. Not to mention, no one would trust you with their secrets at work incase you blog about it.

4. Blogging about your boss is simply stupid. Your boss should fire you for that.

5. Disclosing private and confidential information about your clients, co-workers, boss, HR, cleaning aunty, is simply rude and disloyal.

6. Disclosing your companies’ secrets should/might warrant you a lawsuit.

If you really need an outlet to relief your stress, work place gossips, complaints… go whine at your girlfriend/ boyfriend/ teddy bear. Don’t wash your dirty laundry in public and risk getting sacked, in other words, don’t be stupid.

These are the reasons why I think I found my perfect job:

I wanted a job that requires me to talk and think

I wanted a job that did not require me to sell any product

I wanted a job that pays well

I don’t mind having to work my ass off to earn more money

I’ve only been a full fledge worker for a week, but I don’t know will I make it through… I thought working is like playing a MMORPG and I likened it to a game where players have to farm for money and items, and that’s what us MMORPG players are good at – farming and grinding. However, I soon find out that my job is more like Dinner Dash – 9 hours a day, 5 days a week.

MMORPG - Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

Farming – killing a certain monster or monster boss repeatedly to “farm” for powerful items.

Grinding - killing monster of your level for long period of time to gain EXP (experience points) so you can level up

Dinner Dash - A game that requires you to click on items frantically in a complicated sequence

I used to be able to grind for 10 over hours a day… grind till my head is numb and my fingers aching.

♥

These are the reasons why my job will eventually kill me:

Imagine playing Dinner Dash 8 to 9 hours a day

I feel I’m loaning my brain to the company – my mind is totally stoned when I go home every night

I might have to wear glasses (NO!!!!!!) because I stare at the computer screen and small fonts on paper everyday

There’s only one break inbetween working. I don’t understand why so many people get to use MSN during work. Well, I don’t even have the time to check my handphone for SMS during work.

There’s always too much work.

There’s always not enough time

I have to OT for at least an hour everyday to finish my work

I get time off while farming in MMORPGs, but this job requires my 100% concentration

I think I might have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). I can’t focus on doing things the whole day!

I still think that I’ve got exactly the job I asked for. God must really love me to have answered every single criteria I look for in a job. I didn’t expect working to be tougher than grinding and farming and managing a guild of forty over 15 year olds. I’m not sure if I’m able to work in this job for long, but maybe some pay increment might keep me working

I don’t want to work. I want to laze around at home. I want to watch TV and play computer games whenever I feel like it.

I’m getting old and I guess I have to face reality – The Real World.

What’s this “Real World” people always talk about, I’ve heard the dangers and the politics involved… the geeky side of me says “It’s probably just a tougher game”

♥

If life is a game, the past 10 over years of my life was just a prelude to the real game. You start off as a newbie and you decide your character’s build. Some character builds are better than others and may lead to a better character in the end game. I chose the slightly above average path which lead me to a degree in Psychology.

After getting a degree, I decided I might have built my character wrongly and it might have been a mistake to put stat points into Psych which is a very fun class but not very a very specialized class, but too bad for me, this game you cannot restart (nor can you create another character).

So after farming for stat points in the newbie areas for 10+ years, I finally become an Adult. In most MMORPGs you get to chose which class to become after a certain level, in the same way, I have chosen a path towards HR and a people related job. Now I have finally started on my new quests to gain fame points, items and money. The quests may not be as easy as the ones I did when I was still a newbie, but the rewards are much more.

Currently, I am aiming to hit level 10k/month before I reach 30 years old and I want to drive a BMW some day. When will I complete my quests and upgrade my items (I do not currently own a car though)….. I don’t know. But I know when I play MMORPGs, I usually build very good characters.

♥

I’m so tired and I’m going to sleep. Work is really tough. But I’m just another player in this game of Life. What to do? Just do it.

Decisions, decisions. I guess when I start to work, I wouldn’t have to rely on my boyfriend’s companionship as much. I miss the time we spent in Australia… just the two of us. We would go grocery shopping nearby.. pushing the supermarket trolly back to my apartment in the freezing winter chill.. exploring other suburbs.. traveling to other states… It was truly an adventure and a journey that has brought us together so close..

I do wish for him to work harder and spend less time on computer games, but maybe I’m too pampered by him.. I love talking to him, every single day for the past four years. I love you baby.
