I was invited to attend POCC‘s bloggers initiative and it was a really fun and educational event for all the bloggers that attended. We had a powerpoint presentation on cervical cancer facts and statistics, a magic performance by Magical Babe Ning, finger food buffet, and awesome doctors and POCC staff to educate us on cervical cancer.

I even had my own caricature done!

POCC stands for Power Over Cervical Cancer and this organisation aims to educate women in Singapore about cervical cancer and how it is the only preventable cancer. A vaccination injection course only costs about SG$400, although it might sound costly at first, but this injection can actually save you from cervical cancer!

I had a close shave with cervical cancer when I was only 20 years old. I have been doing PAP smear tests regularly (once every two years) and there was once the test came out inconclusive. The gynecologist suspected that I might have the human papillomavirus (HPV) and advised me to do another PAP smear three months later. I was so relieved to find that the second test came out negative.

I have since gotten vaccinated. It never occurred for me to blog about this before, nor did I share my experience with any of my close friends. Since the POCC has begun to reach out to young women in Singapore to get themselves vaccinated, I think I should do my part to spread the word, to my close friends as well as my readers.

You can do your part to spread the word too! Even though there isn’t a cure for cancer yet, there is at least 1 cancer that can be preventable.
Power Over Cervical Cancer is a campaign that aims to make Singapore the country with the lowest incidence of Cervical Cancer and they need your help to spread the word. Pledge your support for this cause and protect those you care about by telling them about Cervical Cancer. Together, we have POWER Over Cervical Cancer. Click the button below to begin!

Wow. I was invited to the Singtel F-1 bloggers event last week and had the chance to sit in the F-1 simulator!

It was a CRAZY ride! The steering was very difficult to control and we had only one practice round before the real lap began. I was really nervous as I sat in the oversize chair, grabbing the steering wheels with my life and stepped on the pedals to start its engine.

The F-1 race car goes up to 7th gear, but the fastest I could go without crashing into anything was the 4th gear! Knocking into any barriers or railings was definitely a bad idea, as the simulator would shake so vigorously, bumping my head “left right up down”! Don’t ask what my timing was, I was definitely one of the lousier drivers in the room!

We had the chance to try on the F-1 jumper suit as well, it was so stuffy and hot and I was perspiring underneath it! Sheylara looks really hot in the suit though, doesn’t she!

The whole F-1 experience was definitely an eye-opener for me. We only get to see the super sonic speed of the race cars zooming by, the cool victory trophy and women and booze after the race. But what goes behind all those fame and glory, is actually stuffy hot suit, life endangering vehicle, and a whole lot of dedicated training.

F-1 night race would be held in Singapore again this year, and the tickets are already available on sale now. So don’t wait, get your tickets ASAP!

***

Singapore, 24 April 2009 – The S$168 three-day early bird walkabout tickets for the 2009 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX are completely sold out just four days after being launched for general sale.

The remaining 50% of the inventory for this category will now be sold at the regular price of S$188. Based on the current trend, we expect early bird single-day Walkabout tickets for both Saturday and Sunday to be sold out by the middle of next week, with early bird singleday Friday Walkabout tickets anticipated to be sold out by end of the week.

http://www.singaporegp.sg/

LG Prada phone was launched in Singapore recently, and it’s definitely a phone to look out for! This is the second phone made by LG in collboration with Prada, and it is claimed that the first LG Prada phone sold over 1million sets worldwide. No wonder they’re making a second one!

The phone comes in stylish touchscreen face with a QWERTY keypad that can slide out. Some new and improved features of the LG Prada 2 include 3G compatibility with video calling, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, a 5 mega pixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens, full HTML browser and Wi-Fi accessibility. The functions of the phone are rather similar to most new mobile phones out there now, messaging, pictures, games etc. but what really sets the LG Prada phone apart from its competitors is the sleek and stylish fashion accessory launched with the Prada phone – the Prada Link.

(my number censored so u cant stalk me!)

The Prada Link has a big enough interface to show messages, missed calls, caller IDs clearly, the watch still looks very stylish and reminds me of some futuristic gadgets you would expect to see on a science fiction movie. However, sadly, you won’t be able to answer your phone via the Prada Link. The Prada Link currently only works with the LG Prada phone, so if you’re bent on wearing this latest fashion statement, you’ll have to get the phone too! I won’t be surprised if people were to purchase LG Prada because of this watch.

At the LG Prada launch, Chang Ma – Vice President of Marketing Strategy from LG and Matteo Sessa Vitali – Licensing Director from Prada, did mention that this watch is made for both men and women. The watch does look quite adrogenous, and they did mention there would be straps that you can change to suit individual’s taste. However, I haven’t had the opportunity to see the different colour and sizes straps to judge if I would like any of them. The default black actually looks sleek and fits in with the futuristic theme! The watch’s core is made with stainless steel metal, with black leather band, and it is, very importantly, 3 ATM waterproof.

I’ll blog about my experience at the LG Prada event, the six stars St Regis hotel, other bloggers I met (including KennySia and other international bloggers!) and the pictures soon!

STAGE is Alliance Cosmetic Group’s homegrown brand catering to people that want premium professional cosmetics. It’s prices are around the range of MAC and Bobbi Brown, but mostly on the cheaper end of professional make-up.

They held a make-up workshops to pamper us bloggers at their Suntec branch. Attendees include Fidelis, Jessica, Sab, Feliza, Serene, Peggy, Xiaoxue and me! It’s really cute, perhaps not really coincidental, that we turned up in pairs… There was a professional photographer there to capture us beautifying ourselves, and many photos were taken after the session. I’m not sure if we’ll be able to get the photos, but we took many photos of ourselves!

This is me without make-up, sleepy and all…

This is our goodie bag! It came with a mascara, Prime Time Eye Perfecting Base, Lip gloss and a pretty nail polish!

Fidelis and Jessica all excited about the workshop.

The make-up range they let us play with.

Sab, our favourite guinea pig! The professional make-up artist demonstrating different cosmetics and tips to apply them!

Me and Sab complete with make-up!

My favorite product from STAGE was definitely the Studio Perfect Compact Powder and their Kohl Pencil. The Kohl Pencil is an eye liner, though not waterproof, but you can just use a thin angled brush to smudge the the eye-liner for a more shadowy effect. The compact powder I tried, wasn’t too powdery and it’s very light weight on your skin.

The nail polish I received in the goodie bag is red! Just in time for Chinese New Year!

I’m a blood giving virgin, and the whole idea just sounds so cool! Games, prizes, door gifts, and doing a good deed all a day’s work!

As I headed down to Health Sciences Authority, where Singapore Blood Bank is located, nerves started to kick in. I was scared. It suddenly dawned on me that blood will be drained out of my arms…. scary….

Luckily, there were many familiar faces there like Sheylara, Nadnut, Fidelis, Andystorm and as well as other friendly bloggers that were chilling out and enjoying the buffet spread they had for us. We even had a game of snake and ladder!! I was partnered with one of the Nuffnang staff, I think her name was Claire or Clara? And WE WON!!!

Look at the goodie bag!!! A box of BRANDS Chicken of Essence to help with my recovery!

Well, it was time for me to donate blood along some other bloggers…

I must say that it looks very scary and painful initially, but the nurses were very steady and assuring. We were given a squeezy ball to hold on to.

When the needle first pricked into my veins, I didn’t feel much pain and it was definitely very bearable. I have taken various injections for immunization and this is definitely not painful as compared to other injections!

Good quality stuff!

I’ve got a certificate from Nuffnang!

Recently, another brave blogger spoke up and ask the question many others pondered but dared not ask – Who gets invited the blogger’s event?

Claudia’s take on it here

Brian from Oglivy (PR agency)”s take here

The base line is – while everyone is equal, some blogs are more equal than others.

As Claudia and Brian pointed out, some bloggers are invited because they are active in communities such as Ping.sg or Social Media Breakfast, some because they have very high traffic, some because they are connected within the media and blogging scene.

Singapore’s blogging scene isn’t really that big. Singapore’s such a small place that everyone knows everyone when you’re involved in any “scene”; be it sports, arts, music, dance scenes in Singapore. There are only a handful of local blogging portals you can be active in, participate in outings and volunteer in events like I did at Ping.sg’s 2nd Anniversary party.

The baseline is: It’s not difficult to get invited to blogging events if you try to.

Many would agree that a blog started out as medium to write your thoughts and diaries online. However, the definition of what a blog is is rapidly changing. Now any and every website that is popping up is almost always in a “blog format”. Basically, if you target audience now is still your friends and a few kaypohs from your school that wants to read your e-diary, then it’s quite difficult to get invited to bloggers events.

Perhaps a easier analogy would be, imagine if you’re a company looking to advertise. You have X budget to spend on a few billboards. Would you spend the money at Mary the housewife’s house that has an average of 10 people visiting her place for cooking tips and they are mostly the same people everyday, or, would you spend the money at John the handphone dealer’s house that doubles as a gadget showroom and have 1000 visitors visiting everyday? If the spending budget is similar, I’m sure it’s logical to want to have your products exposed to a wider audience.

Why I’m invited even though I only have a couple hundred of visitors a day? I have no idea, probably because someone likes me?

I was invited to attend SoyJoy’s little blogger get together last week. I was a little annoyed because I’ve already watched the movie they were showing Super Size Me. Trust me, it’s not a movie you would want to watch twice!

Why are Americans so fat? Two words: fast food. What would happen if you ate nothing but fast food for an entire month? Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock does just that and embarks on the most perilous journey of his life. The rules? For 30 days he can’t eat or drink anything that isn’t on McDonald’s menu; he must wolf three squares a day; he must consume everything on the menu at least once and supersize his meal if asked. Spurlock treks across the country interviewing a host of experts on fast food and an equal number of regular folk while chowing down at the Golden Arches. Spurlock’s grueling drive-through diet spirals him into a physical and emotional metamorphosis that will make you think twice about picking up another Big Mac.

.

.

.

We were presented with snacks during the film, I only ate the banana and SoyJoy bar!

We were offered various snacks and sinfully delicious chocolate bars during the film, and I’m not a big fan of snacking but I was very hungry so I gobbled up a banana.

At the end of the movie, I felt the same disgust as I had a couple of years ago when I watched this movie. But of course, I don’t eat fast food very often, and moderation is important when it comes to such things.

We had to fill up this little form to indicate what you ate that night.

Carbonated drink

SoyJoy bar

Banana

The point is, banana and the soft drink are high in Glycemic Index. But honestly, this is my dinner! Ok, I was still hungry after the event so I had a small supper when I got home =x

A lower glycemic index suggests slower rates of digestion and absorption of the sugars and starches in the foods and may also indicate greater extraction from the liver and periphery of the products of carbohydrate digestion. A lower glycemic response is often thought to equate to a lower insulin demand, better long-term blood glucose control and a reduction in blood lipids. The insulin index may therefore also be useful as it provides a direct measure of the insulin response to a food.

I suppose this fruitcake-like health bar should be very popular with health conscious people and diebetics. As for me, I don’t mind eating the bar, but I rarely snack in the first place, so I’ll probably give it a pass.

Thanks SoyJoy for the nice evening, and Brian of Oglivy for helping to organise this blogger’s event, and of course Sab for my invite

I’ve been invited and attending more bloggers events these couple of weeks, perhaps because it’s the holiday season, end of the year product launches are rushing to push their brand new toys out into the market. Through these events, not only do I get to sample and test the latest gadgets and health and beauty products, I also get to interact with marketing people and other bloggers.

Some more memorable conversations I’ve exchanged with other bloggers were….

1. Tech65 dude sharing the website at which he bought his digital camcorder at a few hundred dollars cheaper! Warehouse123.com sells a wide range of digital cameras, digital SLRs, audio and camcorder devices. Their office is based in Hong Kong but I suspect goods from China? The company also offers a one year warranty. But I’m seriously consider buying a new digital camera from them!

2. IZ, Gavin and me talking about money. I’m obviously the most ignorant one between the three of us. I have no idea what to do with my money except to hide it underneath my pillow called DBS. While both offered some pretty good advices, I think I’m still going to hold back on what to invest for now. I’m going to be a student soon again, would be bad if I tied up all my money

3. Sab telling me about her new job at Gadget3. Now I’ve got a better idea how companies lias with PR agencies and lias with media press like Sab. We also had a discussion on how the old media is moving towards the new media: PC Magazine USA is now totally digital, shutting down their print, Tina Brown and a team of writers from print media background starting TheDailyBeast.com – a news site that churns out top news in bite size for people like us that have no time to actually read everything.

Who says geeks only have a life behind their monitors! Perhaps no one, since geeky is the new cool!

I recently received a mailer from Nuffnang for an invitation to their new initiative…

Are you my type? – first and ever blogger blood drive in Singapore.

Nuffnang's Blood Donation Drive

I’ve never donated blood in my life before, not because I’m scared of the idea, but it’s one of those things that you want to do but too lazy to make time for.

I’ve mentioned in my previous blog post, about my friend’s sister who was recently diagnosed with cancer. In the last week, she had to go through two major operations to remove some tumors in her body. As the tumors were very near her vital organs, she lost a lot of blood. My friend said needed four bags of blood transfusion during the last operation. When I visited her at Changi hospital, she was receiving blood transfusion for yet another bag of blood because her body was too weak.

We all assume that we aren’t facing a blood shortage crisis in Singapore, hence, why should we donate? Some of you, like me, want to donate but just keep pushing the idea aside because it’s too troublesome. Facing my friend’s sister, frail and helplessly lying on the ICU bed, with tubes probing into her veins and other “holes”, I feel we shouldn’t always have to find excuses for ourselves.

I want to donate blood, hence I will this Saturday.

Will you?
