on Aug 9th, 2011Happy 46th Birthday Singapore

I really love old National Day songs, some how invokes a very patriotic feeling within us… The newer songs, besides “Home”, just don’t have feeeeling ah.

Happy Birthday Singapore. We can achieve, we can achieve.

on Jul 6th, 2011NDP 2011 Singapore National Day Parade Fun Pack Lady Gaga

Hahaha… what do you guys think of this song? Singapore getting a sense of humor gone wrong? Someone wanted to do a Lady Gaga Bad Romance parody and ended up as NDP 2011 song!

on Jun 3rd, 2011My new shades <3

I absolutely love my new DKNY shades! It’s a present from Sabrina and one major reason why I love it so much is because it actually rests well on my nose. I have quite a flat nose bridge and it can’t support many of the designer shades out there. Most sun glasses just don’t fit my nose right. *hmph* This pair of sunnies really look good on me :D

So cool right :D I needed a proper hard shell sunglasses cover so my dear sister gave me this really cute hearts cover that she bought in Australia~

Totally love my friends and family for their generosity!

on May 24th, 2011Funkychargers for iPhone / iPod [Contest Giveaway]

This is one of my favourite advertorial I have received because I desperately need a product like this!!!!

Funkychargers.com is giving away 1 charger for iPhone / iPod on deadpris.com so read on to find out more!!!

I loveeeee my iPhone and it is like the best gadget (it’s more than a phone!) that I own. I make calls, SMS, play games, read news, twitter, facebook with my awesome iPhone on a daily basis. The only problem with that is, when you use too much 3G internet on the iPhone, it drains up my battery very quickly :( If I’m using many social media iPhone apps while I’m out, I can easily finish 3/4 bar of my battery in 3 hours.

I have seen some portable chargers sold in electronic shops but they are all so expensive and I end up telling myself to try to use less battery if I have to be outside for the entire day.

This is why I heart Funkycharger

1. It’s affordable! They are selling it for only SG$17.90 and it comes with free shipping to Singapore at the moment. They ship internationally too but you got to check shipping prices with them. Continue Reading »

on May 10th, 2011Yam Ah Mee – Singapore’s Returning Officer

Returning Officer of the Elections Department Yam Ah Mee became more famous than Tin Pei Lin overnight.

Yam Ah Mee is the Chief Executive Director of the People’s Association.. He was the returning officer whose job was to announce the results of Singapore General Election 2011 and his famous line was “ Pursuant to Section 49, Subsection 7E, Paragraph A of the Parliamentary Elections Act: I declare…” By the end of the elections (which ended at around 3am), we could all memorize that line! Haha…

I saw this cartoon caricature picture by Morby Lin spreading on facebook and it’s really funny haha… It really does look like him!

on May 8th, 2011The Flaws of Singapore’s GRC System

It is the day after Singapore General Election 2011. There were many cheers and many tears shed over last night’s results. Many people cannot stand the idea of having Tin Pei Lin as their MP and it has resulted in many Facebook groups created in protest: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Petition-to-remove-Tin-Pei-Ling-as-a-MP/152408424825883 and http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-do-not-want-Tin-Pei-Ling-in-Parliament/144764052259319 and even an online petition to have her disqualified as Marine Parade GRC’s MP at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/disqualification-of-the-pap-marine-parade-team/

The truth is, Tin Pei Lin, George Yeo and Chiam See Tong are all “freak” cases of the GRC system, the latter 2 can even be called victims of the GRC system. The fact is if Goh Chok Tong was not running alongside Tin Pei Lin in Marine Parade, she would not have a free ride into parliament. If George Yeo was running as a single candidate, against even strong opposition candidates, he would most likely be still in parliament. If Chiam See Tong was running solo, he too would have been elected in. Some people speculated that for Chiam See Tong’s case, he should have stayed in Potong Pasir and ran for the SMC alone. But remember: the aim of all opposition parties this election was to have MORE seats in the Parliament. Chiam See Tong took a risk so that his party can get 5 elected seats in the parliament, it was a pity that it didn’t work out.

The truth is roughly 60% of the Singaporeans voted for PAP and 40% voted for opposition parties but our preference are not reflected in the number of seats taken up in parliament: 81 seats to PAP and 6 seats to WP. How are the people properly represented in government if 40% of the people preferred an alternative voice but they are only represented by 7.4% in parliament? This result came about due to the flaws of the GRC system.

Our government (PAP) can close 1 eye about their alleged blatant gerrymandering but re-drawing our electoral boundaries every election. I would like them to explain how does moving people from 1 GRC to another benefits the people. I have heard people say “what is the agenda of the opposition parties? they are just power hungry or want status!”. Unfortunately, I don’t know what is PAP’s agenda when they keep pushing people from 1 GRC to another GRC. I would like PAP to explain how does that benefit the people and benefit the economy. Let me give you some examples.

1. I live in the area inbetween Dover MRT and Buona Vista MRT: I now belong to the West Coast GRC. My friend lives in Boon Lay, she belong to the West Coast GRC.

2. My friend lives opposite Alujnied MRT: He belongs to the Moulmein-Kallang GRC. Another person that lives near Novena belongs to Moulmein-Kallang GRC.

3. Yet another friend of mine lives near Sixth Avenue (along Holland Road): she belongs to Tanjong Pagar GRC. Another friend that lives in Tiong Bahru: she also belongs to Tanjong Pagar GRC. Yet another friend living in Bt Panjang belongs to Holland-Bt Timah GRC!!!

The list goes on. We live VERY far away from the area of the name of the GRC, and far apart from each other. Someone that stays in Hougang may belong to Aljunied GRC or Hougang SMC!!

How does anyhow cutting the areas up into GRCs improve our neighbourhood? Can my MP in West Coast GRC manage Boon Lay AND Dover the same? Infact, you may be from a GRC with a 100million dollars Town Council fund, but after re-drawing the electoral boundaries, you may end up in another Town Council with 50million dollars funds (let’s take for example). I am not sure if this is even true because I don’t think the GRC system, the Town Council system, our Town fundings are fully explained and made widely available for public records. Transparency please?

How does drawing of electoral boundaries benefit the PAP? Well, they have the numbers of different polling centres around the island, and they can shove blocks that has a stronger opposition support into other GRCs that have stronger PAP support to balance it out. How does it benefit the people? I have no idea.

Most, if not all, of the opposition supporters I have spoken to, really like George Yeo and really appreciate what he did for our country. However, even more people want to see promising talents like Sylvia Lim, Low Thia Kiang and Chen Show Mao speaking up for the rest of us in Parliament. If there is no problem with our government, why did Lee Hsien Loong apologize and George Yeo hoped to reform our government?

Now, if the PAP see the results of this election, it is definitely NOT a strong mandate of the people. This is a wake up call from the people. We are not trying to be disloyal or rebellious – we are all patriots that want something more for our country. We are all trying to be brave, like Singapore’s no. 1 brave man – Chiam See Tong.

I do like the PAP, I do like some policies they implemented in the past, I do like that my country is stable. However, after making so much progress to this nation, shouldn’t we sit back and reflect on what we have done right and wrong and what we can improve on? The reason why many Singaporeans voted for their opposition party even though they are not as strong as some PAP members is because we need more people that can tell PAP where they have done wrong. So far, only when things goes awry then PAP will apologize amend. But many of these things can be prevented if they had more alternative opinions.

I hope that after this elections, after all the outburst of unhappiness and disappointment online be it from PAP supporters or opposition supporters, despite our differences, we can all agree to 1 thing – that the GRC system is not working anymore.

Take from Straits Time’s election page.

on Apr 28th, 2011What is YOUR Agenda? Singapore GE 2011

I feel saddened about the latest attack on Dr Vincent Wiseng ‘s sexual orientation.

Are Singaporeans really so shallow  as to say things like “if he is gay, I don’t want him to represent Singapore” ???!!!?!??!

Even if you do not support the “gay agenda”, it does not mean that a gay person cannot represent your GRC better than a straight person. And BTW, just because someone is married to a woman, it doesn’t make that person straight as well. Who knows how many PAP members are homosexual? And seriously… who cares!

My point is, our representatives in the government should represent the general public. They come from different race, religion, social economical statuses (although most are rich), jobs, experiences, cultures, hobbies, and SEXUAL ORIENTATION. Please don’t be so stupid as to think that there are very few homosexual or bisexual citizens in Singapore. You have a huge majority of candidates that represent your rights as a hetrosexual, why would anyone be threatened by ONE potential MP? That ONE MP would not be able to rock any parliament votes. In fact, just because he is homosexual, that doesn’t mean he has to actively fight for gay rights in parliament at all!

You might have seen me talking a lot on gay rights and gay issues in my blog, this is not because I am homosexual or bisexual. I just feel that they do not deserve to be treated as lesser human beings.

“The issue is not Wijeysingha’s sexual orientation. That is a matter for him,” said the team from Holland-Bukit Timah GRC in a joint statement. Rather, “the video raises the question on whether Wijeysingha will now pursue this cause in the political arena and what is the SDP’s position on the matter”.

Said the PAP team: “We believe that candidates should be upfront about their political agenda and motives, so that voters are able to make an informed choice.”

“Let me state categorically, we are not pursuing the gay agenda and none of our Members of Parliament will,” said Dr Chee.
Its candidates had stepped forward because “they love this country and they know that Singaporeans yearn for an alternative voice in Parliament. That’s their only agenda”, he said.
“When we speak up, we do so for all Singaporeans because we serve all Singaporeans, not just a segment of Singaporeans.”

on Apr 22nd, 2011Straits Times supports opposition?

Straits Times front page yesterday: PAP slams opposition for wanting to lower HDB prices. Straits Times front page today: PAP says Foreign Workers (not talents) creates jobs. Is Straits Times actually secretly supporting the opposition and is actually featuring these stories knowing how it will backfire? LOL It’s really funny.

Read:

Mah: WP’s cheaper HDB flats plan will raid reserves

And btw how does for every 1 foreign worker hired, 1.5 locals are hired in the factory the same as foreign workers creates jobs for locals?! For every 1 foreign worker hired, 1 less local is hired. The truth is we can attract businesses to set up factory here by pushing down wages of our local labour… So who is benefitting from this? Definitely not the poor and less educated. So don’t give me the hypocrisy that foreign workers creates jobs, while trying to imply that it is actually beneficial for lower Social Economics Status citizens.  I am NOT against hiring foreign workers in Singapore because I do agree that foreign workers are needed in Singapore, but I am really disgusted by how they try to twist and turn the story to make it sound good on news paper!

‘Without the foreign workers, we would not have attracted this US$3 billion investment, and Intel and Micron would have built its wafer fab elsewhere. But by allowing in a controlled number of foreign workers, far from disadvantaging Singaporean workers, we have created more good jobs for Singaporeans,’ said Mr Lee.

I am some what relieved  that PAP is not using their “No HDB upgrading scare tactics” for the 2011 elections. It would definitely backfire especially since the heat is on PAP to prove themselves and not seen as a dictatorship partner threatening its citizens.

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who visited an opposition ward at the weekend, told local reporters that it would be in the residents’ interests to vote for a People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate at the next election if they want their estates to be get new lifts and improved shopping facilities.

“I do not want the two constituencies to be left behind, especially Potong Pasir, an old estate. Five years down the road, assuming Chiam do win, there will be no upgrading,” Goh was quoted as saying on state broadcaster Channel NewsAsia’s Web site.

Goh’s comments echo remarks he made before the January 1997 poll, when he told voters that those wards which elected an opposition candidate would be the last in line for upgrading and risked becoming “slums”.

Singapore’s ruling party warns voters against opposition

Seriously, is this even legal? To threaten poorer housing for people who vote for the opposition??? I don’t understand how it works!!!

on Apr 21st, 2011My Vote Counts [Singapore General Elections 2011]

2011 is the year I become a real Singaporean. This will be the first time that my family and I will get to vote. This is the first time we can proudly say that we have a voice as Singaporeans.

For many years, we weren’t given a chance to vote because it was always a walk over in our area! That means, PAP wins without any contest! Finally, this is the first time I am going to vote!

I was quite reluctant to blog about the upcoming Singapore General Elections 2011 for many reasons. I am not someone that actively keep tracks of Singapore’s political movements, and at one point in time, I was much more engaged with USA’s political happenings than locally. Another reason is because… I have not decided whether I will vote for PAP or the opposition for the upcoming elections.

I was inspired to write a blogpost on this topic by this blog article that I came across: My vote counts: 10 reasons why I cannot vote for the PAP in the next election from http://yaevlejunce.wordpress.com/2009/12/12/my-vote-counts-10-reasons-why-i-cannot-vote-for-the-pap-in-the-next-election/

Many of the information written in this blog article are rarely publicized, if at all, in local mainstream media.

It is not surprising that many friends and acquaintances I’ve spoken to about this year’s elections, are mostly voting for which ever party that is NOT PAP. I have also some friends that feel that voting blindly for any party that is not PAP is recklessly voting for something we might not want for Singapore. Although I do feel that most Singaporeans with that mentality might be speaking out of fear instilled in us by the government, there are some truths to it as well.

As I was writing this post, I went to double confirm which GRC I am under… the strangest thing for the past 2 weeks I was thinking I’m under the Holland-Bt Timah GRC and after checking with Registers of Electors Online, I found out that I am actually under West Coast GRC! That is really great news!! I was quite skeptical voting for SDP instead of PAP under the Holland-Bt Timah GRC… But Singapore Reform Party is actually looking quite good with JBJ (Jeyaretnam)’s son Kenneth Jeyaretnam leading the party! Even if you live in “ABC Road” it does not mean that you are under ABC GRC ok! Please go and check the website http://www.elections.gov.sg/online.html to double confirm your eligibility to vote!

Voting at Singapore’s presidential elections or parliamentary elections is compulsory for all eligible citizens. It is part of the responsibilities of being an adult Singapore citizen.

Remember that Singapore General Elections 2011 will be held on 7 May 2011 !!!
