During a conversation with a good friend, I discovered that most of my closer friends are people that do not hold full-time 9 to 5 (9am to 7pm in Singapore) jobs. The conversation went on, and I started churning out philosophical ideas about life and whatnot. The 21st century slave, as I would like to call it, are people that uses 80% of their available brain power for their careers and spends the remaining 20% for basic daily functions such as walking, talking, marketing, socializing etc. Many of these people only have three to four hours a day to themselves, and if you have a family, that few precious hours goes to them.

The working culture in Asia is one that encourages people to act like drones – just act, don’t question. The more opinionated and vocal people tend to find themselves getting depressed in their job, or have to find a job in the creative sector (which is really small in Asia). You have to understand that in Singapore, one’s work is graded since they start schooling, even for art! These unqualified teachers actually gets to grade your drawing, not knowing that one might be a Picasso in the making! Companies run on a hierarchy, whereby the people who are most able to execute commands and please the one sitting above you gets promoted. Not that I am proposing companies to run any differently, but this is particularly so for Asian countries like Singapore, where it has been instilled upon us since young not to challenge someone that is above you i.e. your teachers. I call the working life in Singapore, a constriction of the mind. Even if you are absolutely loving your 9 to 5 job and you’re not made to work like a drone (let’s say you’re the boss aka drone operator), by the time you get home, your body and your mind is so tired that you can’t think about anything else.

After work, many of us still have to go home and look after our families. For the women, some still have to cook and do household chores AFTER their 9 to 5 job while the men watches TV and rests. That’s Asia. Others have to look after their children, help them with their homework or read story books. There’s basically very little time for people to stop and think.

This is in no way their fault, that they are made to be drones. That’s how the society works. That’s how life is.

But what else could the time be spent on?

Expanding your knowledge of anything and everything. Learning shouldn’t stop where you graduate from school. There is so much to learn and know from this life… Not knowing about this life, is like playing an RPG game without reading the story-line, sort of. We are made to lose our child-like curious, innocent, creative minds so that we will all become standard issue robots some day. Without that curiousity, that creativity, how do we further explore ourselves and the world we live in? How do we feel fulfilled?

Think and digest why things are the way the are. Why people behave the way they are. Don’t just blindly follow and accept things as it is. Why should we? Do we really want to be drones?

I guess all my points, points to Maslow’s hierarchy’s self-actualization. Being self-actualized is being someone that doesn’t just live a bitter and unsatisfying life and don’t do anything about it. Many of us can’t do anything about it, because of bread and butter issues, I blame the social construct and unhealthy expectations of the Asian workforce.

I know I’ve got a “talent” for making people misunderstand my core concept of my argument, so if you do feel strongly against what I said in this post, you could leave a comment and I would clarify myself.

I’m not sure if it’s a taboo for a blogger to be blogging about this topic.. But I guess if more people are aware and understand what’s the deal with bloggers getting free stuff, then less people would be pointing fingers that we are beggars. Bloggers are NOT beggars.

If you take a look at my blog, and many other famous bloggers that are more popular than myself, you will see that our blogs have many advertorials on products we are invited to write about.

Quid pro quo.

Unless we’re getting something out of blogging about products and events, we can’t really be bothered to. I would also sometimes blog about events and products that interests me, without being “invited” to do so. If you’re running a magazine or newspaper, and you don’t feel a particular content is really important to write about, you wouldn’t publish it unless it was paid advertorial as well. Don’t be silly to think that magazines and newspapers survive on just subscriptions and off-the-shelve sales. The people that are really paying the salaries of writers and editors are actually the advertisers! So what makes blogging any different?

Blogs are no longer just online diaries where people whine and bitch about their day. Many corporations and individuals blog to bring information to the mass that cannot be captivated as well by the traditional media. It is more personal, subjective reporting rather than unbiased, more objective reporting. Not true as well, if you pay more advertising you get a better rating for your products (3 out of 5 stars instead of 2 out of 5 stars?). This whole “blogging integrity” is a false image that self-righteous (low traffic blogs) people want to sell to you. We are not bounded by any contract to you or anyone else to tell the truth and the whole truth and nothing but the truth. There are, however, some guidelines that most bloggers self-impose due to either principals or just plain courtesy. And for the matter, how is blogging about scandals and things that you know nothing about.. integrity? This sentence is directed to the bloggers that have been flaming ladyironchef by speculating what happened without knowing the full picture.

If we are invited to a product launch, or to try a product or service… and we don’t like what we were offered.. we will simply not blog about it instead of slamming the company that invited us. That’s just basic “Asian courtesy”, or business ethics. Unless a company really offended the blogger in some ways, then be careful having your company name smeared all over the web. If we like the product, we will then blog about it. We are even allowed to blog about some negative points of the products and suggesting improvements. I’ve not had any complaints from any of my advertisers about that. If they are really unhappy, then they would not engage me to blog about their products anymore.

So is it safe to trust the opinions of bloggers? It’s up to YOU! You have a mind of your own to determine whether you want to try out a product or service! If you feel advertisements that says good things about a product is so sinful, then stop watching the TV or listening to the radio. These media are ALL running on advertisements. But because we are bloggers, we can chose what advertisements we want to accept and how to advise our readers.

Recently, there was a Singapore food blogger that got involved in a scandal – ladyironchef . I don’t know Brad, the author of the blog, personally. But I do not believe the one sided report of what Yahoo news claims.

http://sg.yfittopostblog.com/2010/08/23/food-blogger-who-asks-for-free-meal-sparks-outrage-online

ladyironchef responded with this post http://www.ladyironchef.com/2010/08/24/truth/

HELLO???

Beauty and fashion bloggers get invited to events all the time. They are given FREE make-up and beauty products, and they can blog about them at their own discretion. PR companies tries to make such events as enjoyable as possible so as to increase the chances of being blogged about.

Imagine if a beauty blogger gets invited to a nail salon to try their services… and after they are finished with your nails they ask you to pay! HAHA I’ve never heard of such a thing before

A few weeks back I was invited to the launch of Patite Patisserie cake decoration session and I’m sure many food bloggers were there too.

I’m not sure which of those were “Food Bloggers”, but I’m sure none of them offered to pay for their cakes!

If a tech blogger is invited to try a new gadget, after trying and reviewing the gadget, will they be asked to pay for it? O_O? If the equipment is for the purpose of reviewing only, the PR companies would state that they have 2 weeks to play around with the gadget, after which they would have to return it.

I have been to many events where food and drinks, including alcoholic ones, are served. Infact, many of the times, these events invites the traditional media (magazines, newspapers) and bloggers. We are usually treated with equal treatment, if not, better. Why?

If you pull a stunt like this on a magazine writer, his company has to decide whether they want to write poorly about a restaurant and lose potential advertisers. For a blogger, you want to pull a stunt? Simple, we’ll pull you down with us.

Some comments in the Yahoo article even tried to make fun of the saga without knowing any better… They said they want to start a blog and if they were a car blogger, would they receive free cars… hotel bloggers, get free hotel stays.. etc. I’m sorry to burst your joke (bubble), if you are a popular enough blogger with enough web traffic, yes you will get a free car and free hotel stays. Perhaps not a free car in Singapore, since it’s too expensive. If you think it’s easy to become a top blogger, then go start a blog and try it yourself. Take for example XiaXue, her entire wedding was sponsored. She even goes on vacations to Disneyland sponsored. You’re jealous?

I do take blogging as a side job, and I do it seriously. It takes ALOT more than just owning a blog to be considered a blogger. Not everyone can get free meals, free nail services, free clothes, free handphones – but we do. We don’t even have to ask for it.

We are not beggars, this is just business.

Nubox launched two new Apple Premium Reseller stores at Tampines Mall, #01-49, 4 Tampines Central 5, and at Raffles City Shopping Centre, #03-25, 252 North Bridge Road. The new stores will offer the complete range of Macs, including desktops, notebooks, displays and software together with the full range of iPod digital music players, iPad, iPhone and related accessories.

Luckily I left slightly before 7pm, where the crowd gushed into the shop looking for accessories for their iPhones and Macs that were on discount.

I can’t remember when was the last time I was excluded from a “guy’s night out” umm…. hmm… I think I’ve never been excluded from one before, or at least been told directly that I’m going to be excluded from one.

It’s scary that this is my first time experiencing a “guy’s night out” thing and I don’t know how to feel about it. I feel angry, sad, suspicious, outcasted etc. etc.

The reason why I always loved to tag along with a bunch of guys is, I feel so much more comfortable hanging out with guys than with the girls.

“they said it would be awkward if you came along”

Seriously? I would feel more awkward if it’s with a bunch of girls!

Mind you, this is a gamer guys night out. A few of them haven’t met each other before. So it’s more awkward if a new girl joins them than a new guy joins them.

Just so it’s not double standards, I don’t believe in “girl’s night out” as well. Possibly because I don’t really enjoy them, with the exception of 1 bunch of girls I’ve been hanging out with for the past 10 years.

Girls in general are bitchy, conniving, obnoxious when they gather. Many things they do or say comes with hidden meaning or agenda. When boys gather, they just act stupid and lame. That’s my stereotype, and I definitely prefer the latter.

With a bunch of girls, they don’t understand when I tell them “I need to go back by 10pm because I have an online match”. I can’t boast to them my 1337 skills or levels. We can’t share our experiences of the latest games and gadgets. With a bunch of boys, we can talk about everything and look stupid, and it’s okay.

Guys seem to have a perception that girls can’t take racist, sexist, lame jokes. Or that us girls are easily offended by the slightest insult, or that we’re “party poopers”. Well, I can’t speak for other girls, but I’m definitely not one.

Looks like this Saturday I’m staying home, alone, like a man, playing computer games and watching anime. Otaku life FTW.

I saw today’s deal on Jitterbugs 8 sessions of Wackin’ dance class for $40 and I feel really tempted to join! But I’m not so familiar with the Wackin’ style and I think I’m going to wait till Jitterbugs have another promotion before joining

Recently, I received some products to try out. Incidentally, they are both products for sensitive skin and contains no scent or strong chemicals that are bad for sensitive skin types. So far I have been using HADA LABO Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion and Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Face Wash for the past week and found no problems with it. I’m not sure why the products have names that are such a mouthful, but they are apparently Japan’s hot selling products.

The face wash is creamy and foamy, and I haven’t had any pimple outburst since I started using it. However, I do find the smell a little strange. It’s not smelly, but it does smell like unscented bar soap. I’m not sure how to describe it. Just strange. The hydrating lotion is pretty good! It’s suppose to be able to help with retention of moisture for your face. I guess I’m too pampered by nice smelling Body Shop products and somehow I wish they have a scented version as well. Like after washing your face and putting lotion on it, and you can smell peppermint or refreshing flowery scent on your face, it has the aromatherapy effect. But overall the product is good and I will use it alternating with my other Body Shop products

I received Physiogel’s Sunblock and Shower Cream from attending another event. As above, they are not scented. However, for the Physiogel it doesn’t come with a strange soapy smell. The texture and the effect of the body wash is great. As for the Sunblock, I’m not sure if it’s meant for the face, but I applied it on my entire body and went swimming at 3pm in the afternoon. There wasn’t any obvious tanning nor tan lines after that Physiogel products are free from perfume, preservatives and dye, so it’s very suitable for sensitive and dry skin.
