Starting work recently made me very paranoid about my presence online and in the social networking scene. I’ve created a new Facebook page to add my new colleagues and clients, and hide my old Facebook page as discretely as I possibly can!
I guess I don’t really have anything to hide, but there are many pictures of me and my friends having a little too much fun haha! I’m not so worried about this blog since I never did ever revealed many intimate information of myself here.
If anyone does recognise my blog, I hope you will take what I write with a pinch of salt, because often I come across quite strong with my opinions.

I have found in recent months, that increasing number of people make an effort to hide their personal life from their work life online. I can see why that many people will do that… I don’t really want my colleagues to know when I quarrel with my friends, who are the people I hang out with after work, and all the dirty little secrets that we post on facebook and twitter.

Let me give you an example. My sister started work recently and found out that some of her new colleagues have been gossiping about her on twitter – just for the fun of it. Making fun of your new colleague on social networking might seem fun at the time, but I wonder if they ever considered what if the person sees it. In this case, my sister was kaypoh (nosy) and found their facebook and twitter accounts and was quite upset by what she saw.

Personally I don’t like gossiping online about people I know, but I know many people that does that. They think posting their feelings online is their perogative and never considered the consequences that comes with it. I guess just to be on the safe side, I would recommend most people to self-censor your online prescence.

I’ve been searching for a job for the past 1 month. I have sent at least 30 CV out, attended 2 to 3 interviews, even called back a company to check on my application status.

Still no job.

The process of searching for a job in Singapore is really tedious, especially when searching for a job in the niche market. I don’t suppose it is anymore tedious than other countries, but still.

I’ve been bumming around. Going Chinese New Year shopping. Watching countless TV dramas and anime. Playing computer games. Attending fun events.

But I still feel so worthless.

I’m officially now a NEET. Sad, but true.

NEET is an acronym for the government classification for people currently “Not in Education, Employment or Training”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEET

Yup, that’s me alright. I’m doing nothing.

I have been doing my attachment at a hospital in Singapore where I was doing counselling work with patients with emotional and behavioral problem. It was definitely an eye opener after talking to some of these patients. Some of these cases challenged my values and perspective of the world, and others, just broke my heart listening to their stories. My position as a counsellor seems quite hazy at times… sometimes I’m a psychologist, a pastor, a helper, and at times, a friend, to these patients. I never expected to have the chance to counsel patients from such a wide variety of problems. I’ve gotten patients that have problems talking, abused patients, patients that are paralyzed, patients that lost limbs, patients that are depressed, and even patients that seem “alright” to the rest of the world. I guess, in the end, they are more than patients to me. They are people. They are just like you and me.

We often cannot control our surroundings and circumstances, but all we can do is fight for tomorrow. This has definitely been shown me that there are many unfortunate people in this world, and they try so hard to fight just to survive tomorrow. It saddens me that there are other people out there in better circumstances that are just throwing their lives away. I get very existential when I think about this topic because it makes me question the sanctity of life and the meaning of death and loss.

Someone quite close to me was diagnosed with cancer, the advanced kind that has no cure. Doctors gave her a few months to live, but she has survived 2 years since the diagnosis. She is a very young, but very strong lady that continues to fight for tomorrow.

I’ve seen patients at the hospital that has a full head of white hair, wrinkled skin, barely any teeth left – they are above 70/ 80 years old. Yet they continue to go through medication and therapy to fight for tomorrow.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, what circumstances you are in, what background you came from…… I guess we are all trying to fight for our future. We should never give up.

Why are Facebook games so popular? I’ve started to play Restaurant City and Mafia Wars on Facebook when I was overseas, since I didn’t had my computer with me to play any other games. I gave up on Restaurant City after a few days, but I’m continuing to play Mafia Wars, and in some ways, I am addicted to Mafia Wars.

The simplicity of Facebook games, them being casual games, allow for students and working adults to mindlessly click on their little sanctuary and to grow them. Like traditional MMORPGs, these games are basically farming games. By farming, we mean clicking and clicking, doing repeated actions in the game, to level up and achieve certain items or game money. I’ve always wondered why farming in MMORPGs are so addictive even though it can be so tedious, and I even wrote a blog post on how MMORPGs is a reflection of life.

I guess in casual games, it doesn’t matter if you’re smart or stupid, pretty or ugly etc., so as long as you are willing to click in the game, a few times a day, you will be rewarded. That doesn’t always happen in life. It doesn’t mean if we work hard enough, we’ll all be millionaires someday.

The reason why I stopped playing Restaurant City was, it was simply too easy and too mindless. By clicking on your restaurant, making your workers work or rest, and earning money to renovate your restaurant, just doesn’t make sense to me. In the end, all you get is lots of money to renovate your restaurant. If you’re one that is easily contended, the most basic restaurant given to you will suffice. Boring. Next.

Mafia Wars, on the other hand, farming mafia jobs gives you money and skill points to build your mafia. The stronger your mafia, the more power you have to fight other players and “beat” them. I guess the addictive factor of Mafia Wars is that it appeals to our competitive nature. We want to be stronger and better than other players. We want to win. The only thing that is stopping you from becoming a multi-millionaire with the sickest mafia crew is the risk that your manager might catch you clicking away on Facebook during work hours!

It’s a dog eat dog world out there. Perhaps especially so in Singapore? One very important lesson I’ve learnt from working is either you command someone or someone command you, or, both ways.

And trust me, being at the end of the food chain is the worst feeling there is. Some people are born with bigger balls, more guts, so they can start their own business and earn big bucks, others have to be like robots – monotonously slaving their lives away for others, to earn money. I guess, for now, Priss without much working experience or insights into any particular field, I’m stuck being a robot!

But robots can be upgraded too! I’ve plans to further my studies so that I’m a Robot Plus. If you’re fated to be a robot all your lives, it’s better to be a Robot plus right? You get more respect, better pay, less shit from your superiors.

Oh well, if everything goes right, this time next year I should be mugging for my 4th year honors

Priss = Robot upgrading in process

Sure, we’re attracting alot of foreign talents, but are we losing our local talents to other countries that give them more than just a sense of security?

After all, this sense of security is very important to the older generation. A secure job, no natural disasters, a safe neighborhood, good education, peaceful lives. I believe the surge in migrating Singaporeans show that this is not what the current generation needs. We want to explore this “freedom” that western countries have been propagating for years, we want to venture into the unknown, routes that might not always be the safer bet or give any form of guarantee.

In the past, people that did well academically would usually chose to study courses like Law, Accountancy, Medicine etc. Yes, many smart youngsters are still choosing to go into these fields that would more or less give them a financially secure future. However, I’ve also noticed many people are choosing to study liberal Arts subjects like theater, dancing, music. With local Universities and Polytechnics opening more courses in Arts, Social Sciences and the Liberal Arts, I guess the market has spoken. Perhaps, Singapore is heading towards the direction where money isn’t everything anymore, aka, we won’t sell our souls for money?

SINGAPORE: In the last three years, an average of 1,000 Singaporeans gave up their citizens each year.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said their reasons for doing so vary, and these range from marriage to foreigners, to yearning for a different environment.

Most of them took up new citizenship in countries in Southeast Asia, the United States and Australia.

Mr Wong gave this update in reply to a written question from Non-Constituency MP Sylvia Lim.

She had asked how many Singapore citizens emigrated from Singapore in the last three years, the countries they emigrated to and their reasons for doing so.

Mr Wong said those who emigrate generally do not declare this to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority when they leave.

So the only available data which gives an indication of the number of emigrants from Singapore is the number of Singaporeans who have given up their citizenship and left Singapore. -CNA/vm

There’s this really cute and somewhat bashful intern at my office and we all love him to bits~

Kathleen, another of my colleague, reminded me yesterday that it was going to be April FoOooLS! *grin* We all knew what this meant… surprises for our Intern!

I won’t disclose his name here since I’m going dilvulge evil details on our April Fool’s jokes!

Prank 1

We wrote his name down on our daily notice for teachers that are on leave or on sick leave for a class at 8.15am! We had to photocopy a blank piece of daily notice and all of us (including my manager) wrote comments on it to make it look authentic. Intern only comes in at 10am, so imagine the shock he got when he saw his name on the daily notice for cover teachers! He frantically SMS-ed Kathleen (but she ignored him!) and called my handphone to ask me what’s going on! I just acted blur and confused and told him to ask Kathleen when she arrives at work.

Sensing something was wrong, he called Kathleen and demanded to know why his name was there! He even asked a few teachers if anyone actually took the 8.15am class and… well I guess he figured it out and Kathleen had no excuses… so Kat told him it was our April Fool’s prank~

SUCCESS!

Oh… but that’s not it.

Prank 2

On Monday, I found a teacher that was willing to collaborate with us on this prank. I emailed our dear Intern this:

Omg, die die… <Teacher’s name> stormed into the office and demanded to speak to you. She was quite furious and asked if you SMS her on Friday or Saturday. I’m not sure about the details but you should speak to Kathleen about it. But don’t worry so much ok?

Thanks,

Pris

LOL! I can just imagine him panicing, thinking about his actions and SMS to that teacher! When he asked me and Kathleen this morning, we told him that we don’t really know why the teacher was pissed at him and that she’s still looking for him.

During lunch, we told Intern to approach this teacher and said she really wanted to talk to him. Another of my manager, whom was collaborating with us, also asked him what was going on with him and the teacher! His face was kind of red and he was a little nervous and puzzled. Finally, when he approached the teacher, she actually gave him a stern scolding (I’m not sure what about even!) and he just kept apologising. Omg, he’s so cute! LOL

At the end of the scolding, I asked the teacher “so, don’t we all have something to tell <Intern’s name>?”. Teacher replied… “Yes, we do. One… Two… Three…”

HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S !!!!!

I should have taken some pictures of him laughing and blushing! His face was so red!

SUCCESS!

It was such a blasted April Fool’s day at the office. It’s my first elaborate April Fool’s prank that I have successfully played on someone~
