The big question that has been going around is…. Which Tan are you voting for? With Tan Tan Tan Tan running for president, it might seem quite a tough choice, since you can no longer vote based on someone’s surname. Many of my friends and colleagues that I’ve asked still cannot decide who to vote for.

I guess, then, the question is: what makes a good president?

What Makes a Good President

1. The wave.

A good president should have a good wave. I think future presidents wannabes should always practice their waves infront of the mirror. Although hand waving seem to be a very simple gesture, but different kind of waves send people different signals. For example, the other day I stopped by a police road block and I thought the policeman waved at me to ask me to leave. It turns out that he was waving at me and asking me to stop. The incident nearly turned into a scene from Grand Theft Auto. This incident could have been prevented if only he had a better, clearer, wave. He should be sending clear and strong message that : I’m the president of Singapore, my job is to wave well and look good.

Another hand movement that is crucial for a president is the shake. You know how in the business world, people would often assess the other party by how firm his handshake? Since the president is Singapore’s figurehead, he would definitely need to have a good and firm handshake. From the below picture, you can see that SR Nathan has been doing a very fine job in this area.

2. Looking cool and regal in pictures

Alvinology photoshopped some pictures of potential presidential candidates for 2011 and judging on his compilation… I would say George Yeo scores the most point in this area. Too bad George Yeo isn’t running for the elections. Not only should the president look good in the portrait pictures, his wife must also be able to compliment him. I think the best example would be Obama. Michelle and Barack Obama look really good together!

Although in Singapore, looking like hip celebrities can actually be a disadvantage because it might give the impression of non-seriousness. Look at SR Nathan.

Oooooo soooo seriousssss…

Last but not least…

3. Able to take care of Istana with over $4 million a year

This is the most important point to take into account when considering who you want as your future Singapore president. The person must be able to take care of Istana. The Istana is a 106 acre estate, Singapore’s equivalent of The White House, also the President’s home for the duration of his job.

The President of Singapore holds the highest paying political position in the world (overhand salary). However, he needs to pay for his staff and I’m guessing electrical and water bills for his big house! There are so many animals, rooms, fountains, plants, golf course and other facilities, and also people managing the Istana, I’m surprised that the president only gets $4 million! [Info from Yahoo news]

I suggest that all presidential hopefuls to submit their 4 year plan on how they will upgrade, maintain and uphold the prestigious name and structure of the Istana.

So when casting your vote for Singapore’s next president 2011 this 27 August 2011, do think about what are the qualities that you really want from your president. Whether you are voting for Tony Tan, Tan Cheng Bock, Tan Kin Lian or Tan Jee Say, I do hope that you would take the above 3 points into consideration.

Also, PR companies and restaurants should take note of the bloggers that are really “righteous” and full of “integrity”. I.E. Kaelyn Ong aka My Food Sirens II, Glenn Lee aka Hungry Epicurean and Harris Chai. Please don’t invite them to any food tasting or events in case they want to slam your company and accuse you of trying to bribe them. If you really want to engage these bloggers, remember to send them the bill for anything they eat at your event! For the rest of us, we’re happy to be treated to free meals

I’m not sure if it’s a taboo for a blogger to be blogging about this topic.. But I guess if more people are aware and understand what’s the deal with bloggers getting free stuff, then less people would be pointing fingers that we are beggars. Bloggers are NOT beggars.

If you take a look at my blog, and many other famous bloggers that are more popular than myself, you will see that our blogs have many advertorials on products we are invited to write about.

Quid pro quo.

Unless we’re getting something out of blogging about products and events, we can’t really be bothered to. I would also sometimes blog about events and products that interests me, without being “invited” to do so. If you’re running a magazine or newspaper, and you don’t feel a particular content is really important to write about, you wouldn’t publish it unless it was paid advertorial as well. Don’t be silly to think that magazines and newspapers survive on just subscriptions and off-the-shelve sales. The people that are really paying the salaries of writers and editors are actually the advertisers! So what makes blogging any different?

Blogs are no longer just online diaries where people whine and bitch about their day. Many corporations and individuals blog to bring information to the mass that cannot be captivated as well by the traditional media. It is more personal, subjective reporting rather than unbiased, more objective reporting. Not true as well, if you pay more advertising you get a better rating for your products (3 out of 5 stars instead of 2 out of 5 stars?). This whole “blogging integrity” is a false image that self-righteous (low traffic blogs) people want to sell to you. We are not bounded by any contract to you or anyone else to tell the truth and the whole truth and nothing but the truth. There are, however, some guidelines that most bloggers self-impose due to either principals or just plain courtesy. And for the matter, how is blogging about scandals and things that you know nothing about.. integrity? This sentence is directed to the bloggers that have been flaming ladyironchef by speculating what happened without knowing the full picture.

If we are invited to a product launch, or to try a product or service… and we don’t like what we were offered.. we will simply not blog about it instead of slamming the company that invited us. That’s just basic “Asian courtesy”, or business ethics. Unless a company really offended the blogger in some ways, then be careful having your company name smeared all over the web. If we like the product, we will then blog about it. We are even allowed to blog about some negative points of the products and suggesting improvements. I’ve not had any complaints from any of my advertisers about that. If they are really unhappy, then they would not engage me to blog about their products anymore.

So is it safe to trust the opinions of bloggers? It’s up to YOU! You have a mind of your own to determine whether you want to try out a product or service! If you feel advertisements that says good things about a product is so sinful, then stop watching the TV or listening to the radio. These media are ALL running on advertisements. But because we are bloggers, we can chose what advertisements we want to accept and how to advise our readers.

Recently, there was a Singapore food blogger that got involved in a scandal – ladyironchef . I don’t know Brad, the author of the blog, personally. But I do not believe the one sided report of what Yahoo news claims.

http://sg.yfittopostblog.com/2010/08/23/food-blogger-who-asks-for-free-meal-sparks-outrage-online

ladyironchef responded with this post http://www.ladyironchef.com/2010/08/24/truth/

HELLO???

Beauty and fashion bloggers get invited to events all the time. They are given FREE make-up and beauty products, and they can blog about them at their own discretion. PR companies tries to make such events as enjoyable as possible so as to increase the chances of being blogged about.

Imagine if a beauty blogger gets invited to a nail salon to try their services… and after they are finished with your nails they ask you to pay! HAHA I’ve never heard of such a thing before

A few weeks back I was invited to the launch of Patite Patisserie cake decoration session and I’m sure many food bloggers were there too.

I’m not sure which of those were “Food Bloggers”, but I’m sure none of them offered to pay for their cakes!

If a tech blogger is invited to try a new gadget, after trying and reviewing the gadget, will they be asked to pay for it? O_O? If the equipment is for the purpose of reviewing only, the PR companies would state that they have 2 weeks to play around with the gadget, after which they would have to return it.

I have been to many events where food and drinks, including alcoholic ones, are served. Infact, many of the times, these events invites the traditional media (magazines, newspapers) and bloggers. We are usually treated with equal treatment, if not, better. Why?

If you pull a stunt like this on a magazine writer, his company has to decide whether they want to write poorly about a restaurant and lose potential advertisers. For a blogger, you want to pull a stunt? Simple, we’ll pull you down with us.

Some comments in the Yahoo article even tried to make fun of the saga without knowing any better… They said they want to start a blog and if they were a car blogger, would they receive free cars… hotel bloggers, get free hotel stays.. etc. I’m sorry to burst your joke (bubble), if you are a popular enough blogger with enough web traffic, yes you will get a free car and free hotel stays. Perhaps not a free car in Singapore, since it’s too expensive. If you think it’s easy to become a top blogger, then go start a blog and try it yourself. Take for example XiaXue, her entire wedding was sponsored. She even goes on vacations to Disneyland sponsored. You’re jealous?

I do take blogging as a side job, and I do it seriously. It takes ALOT more than just owning a blog to be considered a blogger. Not everyone can get free meals, free nail services, free clothes, free handphones – but we do. We don’t even have to ask for it.

We are not beggars, this is just business.

I’ve seen the drawing of the spider and heard of the Facebook prank where a birthday event got hijacked. I have no idea why it took me so long to finally know who’s the genius mastermind behind all those internet trolling, since Daivd Thorne has been in the news for his trolls since 2008. This guy even got his own Wiki page, you can go read his ‘resume’ there.

Anyway, this guy is seriously the best troll I’ve ever came across. I’m not sure if his trolls of his kid’s teachers are real… although I suspect that they are… but it’s so ridiculous and awesome at the same time.

All his blog posts are so good and I can’t quote you a single one to read. Probably should start off with the one that made him famous >> he drew a picture of a spider and emailed it as payment. http://www.27bslash6.com/overdue.html

As compared to the other boring copycat forum internet trolls out there, this guy is the real deal and I definitely wouldn’t mind if he trolled me. Would be really hilarious!

Dear Blog,

I’m so sorry I’ve been neglecting you for a while now. You know I’ve been so swarmed lately that the only method I can be bothered to update random strangers about my life now is through Twitter and Facebook. I assure you that I have not forgotten about you completely.

Yes, I haven’t even had the time to post pictures and write about the Nuffnang Awards event nor about any mundane detail in my life. Well, I’ve got valid reasons for not updating you. Firstly, I sprained my ankle 3 weeks ago, then 2 weeks back I had sore eyes – neither have fully recovered as I am writing this apology letter. See how much I still care? Next, I’ve been rushing my assignments all LAST MINUTE and churning out 2000+ words essay every week and it is NOT EASY! Then, there’s Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) demo that just came out last week, at about the same time as the launch of Borderlands. You know what, I’ve been so busy, I’m only level 46 in Borderlands! I can’t finish the game (play through 2) and level to 50 before I go for my trip!

Speaking of which, I won’t be able to update you for 2 more weeks because I’ll be traveling to Shanghai and KL. I’m sure you understand that I have a life. I need a break like everyone else. I can’t promise I’ll update you with my trips really soon, but I promise I will TRY my very best to…

I hope my deepest, most sincere apology have touched you and you are willing to pardon my selfish request of abandoning you for a few more weeks. Let’s hope some readers might leave comments here to keep you company while I’m gone ok? *hugs*

XOXO

I’m so excited about this road trip! To be honest, even though Kuala Lumpur is only 5 to 6 hours drive from Singapore, I haven’t visited the country for more than 4 years! I’m pretty sure that the country has changed alot since, hopefully for the better! I’m so looking forward to sitting on roller coasters in Genting and Sunway Lagoon’s theme park! I’ve also prepared a couple of hundred dollars to shop at Mid Valley shopping centre. I’ll try not to shop too much because I’ll be heading down to HongKong end of May with Sab and her sister… another shopping spree!
Speaking of Sab, that idiot, we were chatting in the car today and I was telling her how excited I was about the trip. As usual, the paranoia of dying a mysterious death swamped me, and I told her to take care if I get into some fatal hilarious accident in KL. She said “Eh, don’t die leh! I only have so few good friends!” WTF! We’re talking about MY death and she can only think about her having one less friend to bitch to! HAHA Selfish bitch! But ok la, the world revolves around me, and the world revolves around her, perhaps that’s why we’re good friends

This guy’s signature says:

Everytime you click here a hungry child dies in Africa.

The link brings you to a myspace page, I haven’t clicked on it to see the content, but I wouldn’t want to kill a hungry child in Africa to feed my curiosity!

Does the sentence even make sense? Is the guy trying to be funny, or is there some deeper meaning or parody behind that sentence?

If no one were to ever click on that link, would hungry children stop dying in Africa? Hmmmm…

[Inserts picture of African child, with a button beside that says "KILL", cause I'm too lazy to go photoshop]
