Me: If an Indian and a Malay man drops into the sea and you can only save 1, who would you save?

Him: Neither, I’ll drown myself. (thinking it’s politically correct not to pick a side)

Me: *bursts out in laughter* You’re so bloody racist that you rather kill yourself than to save them!!!

A bad joke to be sure. The reality check is that if someone is attempting to save a drowing person, the lifesaver has to makesure that the drowning victim does not drag both under.

At times drowning victims in their panic simply cannot be rescued.

I guess, but if you do see a drowning person, wouldn’t you feel oblieged to help?

I would of course try to help.

However if the drowning victim was in such a panic I would have to abandon the attempt until the victim calmed down.

A rescuer cannot become a secondary victim. If that happens, there is often no one left to perform rescue breating or CPR.
