I guess expectations have to be managed. Face it. We might or might not be getting any money back.

There’s already a Facebook group for victims of Wax In The City to gather for victims of the Wax In The City Scam in Singapore

After lodging with CASE, I realised that it was a wasted trip. CASE can’t provide any answers and was only able to advice me to bring it up with Small Claims Tribunal ASAP. I was furious! I asked the guy “you mean people can just set up a company, collect money from people, then close down business and run away with it?!” The CASE person replied that if the company has closed down, then even Small Case Tribunal wouldn’t be able to help!!!

OMG, I never knew that people scam money and get away with it!!

You know what is the worse part of the problem? I am paying this package worth $1000+ with UOB installment plan and UOB refuse to stop the transaction! So I will be forced to pay $88 every month for the next 9 months for a service that I will never be able to receive!

Here is what you can do, as adviced by CASE and other forumers:

1. Purchase a business profile of Wax In The City ($5) from www.bizfile.gov.sg or you can download it from here (not uploaded by me) http://sendbigfile.net/download.php?sid=fP2g8XIv

2. Submit your complaint form (and 3 copies of the form) http://app.subcourts.gov.sg/Data/Files/File/SCT/ClaimForm.pdf, photocopies of your supporting documents (receipts) and the business profile of WITC to Small Claims Tribunals at 1st level, Subordinate Courts, 1 Havelock Square, Singapore 059724

This will cost you $10 to $20

Opens Monday to Friday 8.30am to 12noon and 2pm to 4.30pm, Saturday 9am to 12noon.

3. Sit and wait, or, go online and complain some more!

PLEASE GO FILE THE REPORT WITH SCT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! If the company closes down, there’s even a lesser chance of you claiming the money back!

  3. Angry with Wax In The City sucking my hard earn money. I still have balance of S$190.20. I had already very pissed off with their service and altitude after 1st three treatment. Very difficult to get appointment so I booked on line month by month to quickly finish off the package. Actually, I had appointment with them on March but had received a call from Craig Road Branch informing me they will be doing renovation and put me to Orchard Branch. I had encountered bad experience and long waiting time at Orchard Branch and instead rescheduled my appointment with Craig Road on April 9. But yesterday when I read Sin Min then realized that they had actually closed down one by one. BTW, I actually paid full instalment through UOB Visa, am I able to get by from UOB Visa. But I doubt so………

  6. Shit! I have abt $900 left in the package left. I paid $1057 for it last year. N worse still , wf UOB bank. Dun ever spend or pay wf UOB bank, they told the newspaper that they will look into the case but reply to customer no solution but to continue paying. Seems like Case can do nothing about it, nothing will be done to help stranded customers like us.

  7. I’m shocked that UOB doesn’t allow you to stop the installment.

  8. YAH! DBS and POSB customers will get their installments stopped EXCEPT FOR UOB CUSTOMERS!

OMG. I thought UOB was a great card to have… until now…. I’m so disappointed!

    Comment by Priss — April 1, 2010 @ 3:19 pm

  9. Cancel your card. It’s ridiculous to pay for something you don’t even use. OCBC told me my payments can be stopped so I don’t see why UOB can’t do it.

    Comment by Chino — April 2, 2010 @ 3:20 pm

  10. The best part is… UOB told me if I want to cancel my card, I have to pay $100 to “advance the installment payments” for administrative fees!!! I can’t cancel the card without paying them money for another 10 more months!

    Comment by Priss — April 2, 2010 @ 7:51 pm

  11. sigh… i’m one of those unfortunate souls who signed up a package. I’ve actually still got about $2k in installments to pay. I’m not sure if it’s fortunate that i paid using a DBS card cos when i called they innitially told me that there’s nothing they can do to help(and that i needed to go to the small claims tribunal); it was only when i insisted the gentleman on the line said he’ll put it up for management’s approval.
What i now fear is that they may not help as the amount is relatively high. I guess I’ll know the result in about 3-4 working days.
From now on i’m definately staying away from such packages, be it saloons, spas etc…
hope it all works out, i definately do not want to be parking out monthly payments for something that doesn’t exist. It would be better served giving to charity~!

  12. I’m very shocked to know that I can’t stop my installments with UOB bank. I still have 5 balance installments and the bank told me that I cannot stop paying as they (UOB Bank) had already paid to the owner! hOW WOULD i KNOW THAT THEY HAVE THIS REGULATION??? Why is it that OCBC or other banks can have their payments stop & UOB can’t! I have always been using UOB credit cards & this is so disappointing!

  14. I called up OCBC to stop installment plan which I had signed for Wax in the City, but they said they have paid up the merchant the full sum, hence they couldn’t stop or hold the installment, I would have to wait for the result of the investigation and only to notify me in due course (sound hopeless!!) Looks like i have no other choice but to continue paying for the service I would never get to receive…Can anyone advise who and what is the proper channel for us (the victims) now?

  18. I overheard from the news that there are 3 other spa/ mani company who are willing to takeover the existing accounts of WITC. Has anyone heard the Name of these 3 companies? Has anyone tried to contact them?? What is the catch?? And what are the conditions? eg. receipts/ membership card?

    Comment by JC — April 5, 2010 @ 11:40 pm

  19. The 3 spas rumoured are Rustic Nirvana, Atos Wellness and Subtle Senses.

But currently there are no confirmation as to how they will help and under what terms.

  21. Oh no, I paid in full last year and still have about $800 left on my package. Really lost as to how or who to approach with this problem. If the rumoured 3 spas are willing to takeover the existing accounts of WITC, would they be contacting us, how long do we have to wait? In the meantime, should we submit our complaints to Small Claims Tribunals??

  24. I just spoke with someone named Anthony with customer service of UOB and he said almost the same thing, which is to file it with CASE or Small Claims or customers should get in contact with the merchant to demand a refund…der…told him there is no way we can get in contact with the merchant, much less to get a refund. He then said that since I have called and explained, then he would register my case with UOB and that they would investigate. After 2 weeks or so, UOB would either call or send me a letter informing me of the outcome of the investigation. He sounded polite but also sounded like it was no point continuing conversation with me when I mentioned that there were lots of talk about UOB not providing help to the card holders as opposed with other banks.

Guess I am as unfortunate as Hopepest as I also have signed up a more than S$2K package in Oct ’09 that was supposed to last for 2 years with unlimited visits (full of crap and bullshit). I think I used less than S$500. Don’t have the exact figure ‘cos when I asked for a receipt, WITC said not necessary to issue receipts but I could check from their membership website for the balance.

Hi Piglet, I don’t think there is a fax number for Small Claims as complainants are supposed to lodge it personally. I will be filing with Small Claims this Saturday once I have made a police report. Hope to see more of you ladies there. Whether the 3 companies are taking over or not, we should just file our grouses with Small Claims. I don’t see how these 3 companies will take over without imposing additional conditions on us victims. They aren’t charitable organisations so won’t do any business which is not profitable or in their favour.

Hopefully the S$3K package that I signed with a photography company is still there or I would have lost a total of about S$5K!!! I probably was not in the right frame of mind when I signed for these packages…sigh. NO MORE PACKAGES FOR ME.

  29. Firstly I am so disappointed with UOB.. Whereby hv been such a loyal credit card user.. I’ll stop using UOB already..
As for SBWA, I personally feel that it’s very much unjustifiable and unfair for us just to take up or chose one of the outlet shown and yet agree to their terms & conditions??? It foes nt make sense that we can only utilize e services on off peak hrs and time.. Does it mean that I hv to take leave in order to use e services? Why are they charging more that what their customers are getting?

    All these seems so unfair!!!

  33. You can do one more thing to stop it from closing down.
Go to http://www.bizfile.gov.sg > local company>Striking Off of Company>Notification of Intention to lodge objection of future striking off.

This can prohibit the company from striking off, and when they are applying for striking off, ACRA will send you a letter.

I’m not sure by lodging the case with CASE, will it stop them from striking off but I am sure this step can. It’s just that you need a Singpass to do that and a fee of $10. The notice holds for only 1 year.

  35. I am one of the Victim of Wax in the city liquidation ! Guess I am the most unfortune one ! As i cancel the package within a week before they close down in last year DEC, the guy called Alex call DBS directly without my consent to process the transaction, I never wish to sign up any package with them.. BUT now DBS demand payment from me, I refuse to pay them by informing them that I already log an complaint with CASE as well as informed DBS to get fund back from WAX in city before they close down. I would appreciate if someone there could help me on my situation! I did not sign any sales contract with them except been force to sign the credit card transaction as Alex said the transaction has been processed and no way I can cancel.. is that true??

  37. Hi guys and gals, I just found out that Wax In the City has applied to ACRA for strike-off on 13 October 2010. You must object in writing to ACRA so that hopefully, the strike-off will not go through. If it does, that Alexis will get away scot-free.
