I’ve been very conflicted about the topic – how much sex is acceptable in our mainstream media? I do believe in freedom of speech, to a certain extent, but how far should people push the limits? There’s a reason why we set content labels for movies and TV shows, warning people that the movie may contain violent graphics or sexual graphics or many vulgarities. I’m not sure if the music industry have set the same standard, but perhaps they should be even stricter with music.
Why?
In the recent 2 months, I’ve been clubbing quite a lot due to the festive seasons and party season! Partying can be a whole lot of fun. Then I heard this really catchy song and this song have been playing on the radio as well. I didn’t really know the lyrics of the song, but it didn’t matter, because the song sounded really nice. One day, my younger sister started singing the song at home and I realised what the lyrics was “you’re a sexy bitch”. Some how I’ve always thought it was “you’re a sexy chick”, only to realise, that’s because they partially censored that word so it sounded more like “chick”.
If you read the lyrics of the song, I hope you find it totally ridiculous like I did. One of the sentences went..
She’s nothing like a girl you’ve ever seen before
nothing you can compare to your neighborhood whore
I’m trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful
Then the chorus goes…
Damn Girl
Damn You’s a sexy bitch
a sexy bitch

It doesn’t make sense to me why is he contradicting himself…. or does he feel that calling a girl “sexy bitch” is not disrespectful? And just who he thinks he’s calling “neighbourhood whore” ?! Using such vulgurl words on women is just totally DISRESPECTFUL! I seriously don’t know any girls that would feel flattered being referred to as a “sexy bitch”.
Needless to say, I still listen to the song on my club mix CD in my car. What I’m raving about isn’t just some technicality issue of writing lyrics, but the media and the society’s perception of what is acceptable. If you think I’m being anal over what our kids might be listening to… then go read about the people that think there are subliminal message in our media.
