on Jul 10th, 2009Doubtful of Singapore’s policy on H1N1 Swine Flu

I got this from a friend’s facebook comment. I hope she doesn’t mind me posting it here… but basically, she is running high fever and all the other H1N1 symptoms. However, she was told that she would be treated as a normal flu case so as long as she did not come into contact with any known H1N1 patient.

Am I safe to say that many people can be suffering from H1N1 without realizing it, and since the doctors are going to treat most cases like a normal flu case, there is no big difference between H1N1 and other strains of influenza? How serious is this H1N1 virus exactly? Alarm is raised all over the world, but seems like concern for this flu is dying down. Does that mean we don’t have to be worried anymore?

I just want to know this: do we or do we not have to be worried about H1N1?

    Hi Pris,

Have been following ur posts on H1N1. I’m tracking this in my company now.

H1N1 is not deadly; it is rarely fatal. The deaths you see published by WHO are usually people predisposed to falling seriously ill even with a slight flu. This can include old people, people who have low immune system due to health complications or even young children.

For people like you are me, we are relatively safe. As they say, it is a normal flu.

Then it begs the question on why there was so much hype about it in the first place and about containment.

Well, this came about because H1N1 is highly infectious. So even if it is not deadly, health authorities are afraid that H1N1 will spread widely and later on mutate to gain immunity or be resistant to drugs.

You know how pple do not take their full course of antibiotics and stuff. By having a large pool of people getting the virus, the chances of mutation is higher.

It is this that the authorities are afraid of. They have tried containment for so long but to little avail. The only way now is to mitigate the problem by making sure pple get cured faster and stop spreading if possible.

So ya. Don’t worry too much or quarantine excessively. Just take necessary precautions like dosing urself with vitamins, wash ur hands, avoid sick people and being mentally healthy.

    cheers!
