on Apr 25th, 2009AWARE of their lies?

I wanted to blog about this sensational story on a bunch of women who overthrew the old exco of AWARE, a woman’s right advocacy group, but without sufficient evidence, I thought I should remain quiet. Finally, their fox tails have shown 漏出狐狸尾巴.

1. It was revealed that even though the new exco members claimed they did not know each other before the AGM, five of them were under this “feminist mentor” Dr Thio and some were from the same church. Yeah right. It’s so obvious that it was a planned coup that the more you try to hide it, the more ridiculous you look.

2. They claimed that they did not have any hidden agendas when first interviewed, and that they were going to take over from their predecessors and further their work. Yeah right.  How can you push for equality of gender if your stance if anti-homosexual? Will the new AWARE be preaching bigotry instead?

3. The old AWARE taught children contraception, abortion, gender equality, and not to discriminate people based on race, gender, sexual orientation etc. Were they doing a wrong thing? Do these Christians from Church of Our Savior want to promote discrimination? They want to preach abstinence and intelligent falling in schools? Do they also want to replace science lessons such as physics, chemistry and biology into bigotry101 and “how to be a hypocrite” classes?

4. The new exco listed the old AWARE team pushing for male voters in AWARE as something to be frown upon. Huh? I thought we’re pushing for GENDER EQUALITY, but men are smelly pigs that will probably ruin any decision making. *shrugs* I can’t really argue on that, may be they have a point. If we let men vote, who knows! They might overthrow the current AWARE exco and advocate for male rights instead!

5. If the new exco wanted to push for anti-homosexual agendas, they why don’t they create their own association instead? Why must they be so sneaky, planning a coup, then fire all the old staff and changed the locks of the office while chasing away some people that were there for counselling. What if one of the person going for counseling was suicidal and dies because of that! :O What is wrong with these morons?! How would you like it if someone were to stomp up to your church and declared that the church would be used for another religion?  Then fires your priests or pastors (not literally! I’m not sending a death threat!), and lock out all the church goers. Sounds like a plan.

6. You wonder what has Singapore become when there are people sending you death threats, when your husband and children are harassed, when your companies give you warning letters. Josie Lau, you did not JUST joined AWARE, you overthrew an association to preach “lesbian as a bad bad word” (aka anti-homosexuality), you seriously did not expect this? You expected Singaporeans to sit quietly in a corner or condoning you and your crusades? Well, I wonder what Singapore has become when religious right winged fundamentalist takes over a NGO and decides to preach bigotry to the public. You want to preach anti-homosexual themes in your church, go ahead. You want to do it in a national platform. Fuck off. How would you like it if another religious group were to go around preaching for men to have four wives? Haha…..

7. Bigots should not complain when they are being bigoted.

8. The new AWARE team’s 大姐大 “Big Sister Thio” claims she is not anti-homosexual, and she understands that many homosexuals are from abusive families. Huh? I understand that many OCD sufferers are from fundamentalist religious background too. What’s your point? Could it be Dr Thio is saying that we should counsel these troubled homosexual people in private, while prosecuting them in public? While pushing for the public’s opinions against homosexuals? While causing them even more pain than their “abusive fathers”? Please don’t be such a hypocrite la.

9. Will AWARE push for Woman’s Rights if the woman in question was a lesbian? Or would they tell the woman that she deserves to be discriminated because she does not want to have sex with men? You are only equal in our eyes if you follow our rules.

There are many reports on this issue, and the above was just some of my views. I’m not a homosexual, but I’m one that is super anti- anti-anything. Why can’t “these” Christians be more loving people? The government is already on the anti-homosexual’s side, there’s no war for you to fight here. Many of our youngsters already find homosexuals disgusting and repulsive, many of our homosexual friends are already being discriminated by their friends, work place, society at large. Do you really need to join in the fun? Are we not doing enough to torture them?

Bravo. A wonderful post that sums up my feelings entirely. And I like the “i’m not sending a death threat”. It seems that everyone who’s not popular with others at any point in time have to go to the police and say they received deaths threat.

I think since Singapore is a secular state, it should mean that whilst we tolerate (read: not accept) other’s religion views, it should never be a fundamental part of influence in our lives, especially when you’re running other people’s lives there at AWARE.

I have never had any respect for Dr Thio elder here, ever since Thio junior gave that speech in you know where which totally does not make much sense and does not seem to have came from a Law professor. I am aghast that a Law professor, and an ex dean for that, has no sense of logic, but is ruled deeply by religion.

The new “guard”, stupidly attacked the media, saying the media is also playing a part in creating shit, has now gotten smacked by the media. They really dig out more things.

Now we know they are all together. The Thios have so much hatred against homosexuals, that they have to get their relative (read: current President) to do something about it.

Sad, I would say. What a waste of time. And ruining other people’s past hard work too. They simply do not understand AWARE’s values.

Thanks. I feel especially pissed off, hence the numerous instances of broken English in this post, when I read about people hiding behind the mask of justice to conduct unjust. We live in a multi-cultural, multi-racial society, and having them shoving their Bibles into our mouths is making me gag.

what gender equality? AWARE is an association for WOMEN. Not an association for homosexuals.

Section 377A is a law primarily targeting MALE homosexuals. For the old AWARE to champion that, is a deviation from the main objection of AWARE as far as I’m concerned, even when I don’t give a fxxk as to what AWARE does. While I may not support this political coup by the conservative elements, let me just say I find it utterly amusing how some of you are getting led around by an agenda started by non other * gasp * the STRAITS TIMES. Right from the first article they already start talking about the new ExCo’s letters on the S377A matter.

A woman can be discriminated for her gender – as a wife, as an employee, for her physical self (i.e. pregnancy, small physique where hard labor is needed, menstruation etc), but , I am trying to think of something that is Lesbian discrimination in Singapore. If I am an employer looking for blue-collar workers, I will in fact welcome butches. I need ‘butches’ to supervise my bengalah workers, and do the heavy lifting work like men. Consider that ‘discrimination’, Priss.

Gender equality as envisioned by AWARE team in their website. I just merely use their words… http://www.aware.org.sg/?page_id=17

It’s not an association for homosexuals, but what’s wrong with old AWARE helping out this minority of women? Or should AWARE be discriminant in helping certain groups of women only, as in the case of new AWARE.

Regardless on how Straits Times is selectively focusing on the 377A topic, the new AWARE team’s agenda is still apparent, they do not deny that they are unhappy with old AWARE’s pro-gay stance and wishes to rectify it. We are not being led around by ST, the new AWARE’s actions speaks for themselves.

I don’t get your last point, that discrimination is natural and necessary? I agree to a certain extent. But many lesbians and gays are still hidden in the closet because of the discrimination. I know at least three gay/lesbian being asked to step down from his/her work positions because of their sexual orientation that was public. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/281669/1/.html the gay relief teacher?

I’ll be more afraid to let fundamentalist nut jobs near my kids than gay people. -shrugs-

AWARE’s comprehensive sexuality guide says “it is okay to have anal sex, just use a condom”… on the Straits Times today.

It’s doesn’t take a Christian to see that this is so wrong to teach our kids… you guys are so spun up to the Christian conspiracy you fail to see what is wrong here.

I do not want my daughter to be taught in schools that being lesbian is normal and that she should embrace and experience it. I do not want my son to be told by his friend that it is okay to poke his asshole as long as a condom is used.

    What’s wrong with you guys?

  7. Prisson 26 Apr 2009 at 12:40 pm

I understand that parents wouldn’t want their kids to become homosexuals. I personally do not feel that homosexuality is a choice, unless you’re bisexual and you’re making a choice for either sex. If you daughter or son wishes to be homosexuals, would you not rather them use condoms?

Although I agree that “it is ok to have anal sex” is bringing it a little to the extreme, I’m really doubting that that was what was told to the students, since anal sex is illegal.

I feel that Straits Times have focused the entire topic on homosexual and homophobic that both camp’s agendas probably been completely twisted and distorted. What I’m upset is the LIES that the new AWARE ExCo have been telling from day 1.

As I have said, if they want to preach for pro-family in their church, it’s their prerogative, but using underhanded tactics to take over NGO to push for their agenda doesn’t reflect very well on them, on their church and on their religion.

Did they really have no other options but to resort to this? Are they really on the side of woman’s right? Will they be serving the community justice by doing so?

  8. anonon 26 Apr 2009 at 1:43 pm

    Please don’t quote selectively.

The original quote is that anal sex can be healthy or neutral if practised with consent and with a condom. You cleverly omitted the words ‘with consent’. No one is asking your little kids to do anything they do not want to.

Straight couples do anal sex too you know. Why else do you think section 377 was removed recently?

(Btw Priss, anal sex between straight couples is not illegal)

This has been pointed out to you in other forums you posted this message in.

  9. Prisson 26 Apr 2009 at 2:02 pm

Oh, I didn’t realised they changed that law… I thought anal sex between straight couples are still illegal… lol

But anal sex between same-sex couple is still illegal…

    One more thing, I think 377 haven’t been repealed successfully, sadly… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_377A_of_the_Penal_Code_(Singapore)

Correct me if I’m wrong :(
