on Mar 9th, 2008Funny Youtube Videos vs. Singapore Television

Growing up watching Singapore television (and cable), I’ve found that I do not enjoy “Singaporean humor” they show on TV. One might argue “Gao Xiao Xing Dong” and “PCK Pte Ltd” were really funny, I guess I do watch these comedies once in a while because they were comedies with local flavour - you can’t get it anywhere else in the world.

However, “Singapore humor” as shown on television consists mainly of lousy puns, a retarded person, a retarded person falling off the stairs, and an uncouth person acting dumb. And laughing at retarded people are sometimes akin to the 1700s “asylum circus” where people paid money to go into asylum to see crazy people, which was probably, amusing.

With the “aid” of Internet, I have been exposed to other kinds of comedies. The satirical, political, subtle, witty kind of comedy. Perhaps, some people prefer that comedy to be more mindless and relaxing, but I really enjoy comedies that make people think and feel smart about it.

I LOVE The Colbert Report!!!!!!!!!

Youtube also allowed us to watch many stand-up comedies and many amateur and self-made comedies. Yes, the funnies are now in youtube.

What’s the problem with that, you might ask…

Youtube provides free, funny, convenience laughters… isn’t that a good thing?

In the entertainment industry, if the comedians are simply not making enough money, few would want to be comedians. Are we all going to depend on 16 year old Asian-American boys and 30-something gay men for our daily laughter anecdotes? In the same way that file sharing and MP3 files are killing the music industry.

I demand that Singapore television (and other countries) improve their quality of humor and don’t let the laughters die.

I have to salute to Singapore’s “The Noose” which aired a while ago, it was Singapore’s attempt to create a satirical comedy show. Although the show was not as funny as other comedy serials I’ve watched (mostly from Comedy Central), it was a really good attempt and Michelle Chong surprised me with her role in the show.

Let me end this post with a really funny video I found on Youtube brought to us by the good people of College Humor.

It’s a movie based on the game “Mindsweeper” that you can play on Windows :)
