on Jan 21st, 2008Religion: The Root of All Evil

After watching Richard Dawkins’ The Root of All Evil … It further comforts me that not believing in any religion is Ok.

Dawkins talked about how all religions (in the context it was Judaism and Islam) believes that they are all doing the “right” thing and their believes are are real. They believe that they are partaking in the fight against evil. Dawkin says it’s not a fight of good versus evil, it’s a war of two evils. Hence, The Root of All Evil title suggests that all religions are evil.

I do not personally have such extreme views of religion, I believe that it is important for some people to have a religion, just to have someone or something to believe in. However, after watching his show, I understood what he meant by religion is evil and how the society slowly disintegrating under religion. World peace is probably threatened by religion itself.

Priss thinks, whether you believe your religion’s God created the world or not, religion will surely be the reason that destroys mankind.

I’ve always kind of hated myself that I couldn’t find a religion or a God to believe in since young. My friends were mostly Christian or Buddhists (Singapore version, they pray to Gods instead of striving for nirvana). I’ve always been a very curious child and maybe it’s the instinct in me that wouldn’t allow me to give in to religious words or doctrines. If I weren’t, I would probably be as susceptible to believe in Santa Claus or tooth fairy. Well, I suppose if more than half the world believed in the tooth fairy and wrote books and tales of the fairy, you would probably believe in her too. But I wouldn’t. I believe that there exists a higher entity, his name maybe God or Allah or Buddha or they might just be all manifestations of it.

My “God” wouldn’t want people to kill each another, my God would not reward you for such a barbaric act, and my God would give unconditional and limitless love for everyone and anyone. This is not the “Christian God” nor the “Judaism God” nor the “Muslim Allah”, because these are vengeful, jealous, spiteful God. And I cannot reconciliate with myself that my creator would be a God like that. Of course what we know of those Gods are told to us by scriptures and teachings, they may not be as barbaric as portrayed after all.
